چکیده

While the average metallicity of the intergalactic medium rises above Z & 10Z⊙ by the end of the reionization, pockets of metal-free gas can still exist at later times. We quantify the presence of a long tail in the formation rate of metalfree halos during late stages of reionization (redshift z ≈ 6), which might offer the best window to detect Population III stars. Using cosmological simulations for the growth of dark matter halos, coupled with analytical recipes for the metal enrichment of their interstellar medium, we show that pockets of metal-free gas exist at z ≈ 6 even under the assumption of high efficiency in metal pollution via winds. A comoving metal-free halo formation rate dn/dt dV & 10 Mpc yr is expected at z = 6 for halos with virial temperature Tvir ≈ 10 4 K (mass ∼ 10 M⊙), sufficient to initiate cooling even with strong negative radiative feedback. These halos will appear as absorption systems with a typical hydrogen

The formation rates of Population III stars and chemical enrichment of halos during the Reionization Era

The First Stars in the Universe form out of pristine primordial gas clouds that have been radiatively cooled to a few hundreds of degrees Kelvin either via molecular or atomic (Lyman-α) hydrogen lines. This primordial mode of star formation is eventually quenched once radiative and/or chemical (metal enrichment) feedbacks mark the transition to Population II stars. In this paper we present a mo...

The Extended Starformation History of the First Generation of Stars, and the Reionization of Cosmic Hydrogen

Population-III (Pop-III) starformation (SF) is thought to be quenched when the metallicity of the starforming gas has reached a critical level. At high redshift, when the general intergalactic medium (IGM) was enriched with metals, the fraction of primordial gas already collapsed in minihalos (above the Jeans mass but below the mass corresponding to the efficient atomic cooling threshold for SF...

Two populations of metal-free stars in the early Universe

We construct star formation histories at redshifts z & 5 for two physically distinct populations of primordial, metal-free stars, motivated by theoretical and observational arguments that have hinted towards the existence of an intermediate stellar generation between Population III and Population I/II. Taking into account the cosmological parameters as recently revised by WMAP after three years...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

A Cosmic Milestone: Constraints from Metal-poor Halo Stars on the Cosmological Reionization Epoch

Theoretical studies and current observations of the high-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) indicate that at least two cosmic transitions occur by the time the universe reaches gas metallicities of about 10Z⊙. These are the cosmological reionization of the IGM, and the transition from a primordial to present-day mode of star formation. We quantify this relation through new calculations of the ...
